Study Abroad Blog from Denmark, Vol.1

Hi, this is Riho, and I study abroad to Technical University of Denmark (DTU) during this June as an exchanged student of summer program. Surprisingly, it has already passed one week to be here. Below, I’d like to report my first week’s experience and the course I take.

Soon after I got to be here, Copenhagen, I went through sightseeing places. Also, I joined the tour organized for summer exchanged student by DTU. Overall, the buildings in Copenhagen are beautiful with historical Western architecture. This is very first time to come to European countries, so it’s so fantastic for me. The following pictures are from my folder.

The course, smart cities, that I take has started since June 2. Copenhagen is famous for one of the smartest cities in the world, I thought that studying about Smart Cities is useful and helpful for my master thesis and decide to come here. The course is held every afternoon of weekday, mainly we have lecture and group work sessions. During first week, the contents of my lecture was:

  • Smart cities and sustainable development: goals, challenges, and risks
  • Urban development indicators and case study
  • Smart city infrastructure, technologies, and solutions

Especially, I was interested in the lecture of “Smart city infrastructure, technologies, and solutions” because it was related to urban development (it’s my field of master thesis). For urban development, one of the important needs of smart cities is solving the inefficiency problem of the current urban design and planning mechanism. In this context, the Professor mentioned that the definition of “Smart Cities” is so complicated. However, its definition is Smart city= “Smart”+“City”, which relies on City Experts and Information Experts. Smart Cities use connected technology and data to (1) improve the efficiency of city service delivery (2) enhance quality of life for all (3) increase equity and prosperity for residents and businesses. Besides, Smart City has six-dimensional model. It was developed by Boyd Cohen for identifying smart cities, nowadays, it’s accepted international tool widely.

Based on this model, we discussed which dimensions can be addressed to smart city application that my group would like to suggest for final poster session. It’s now going on, but we’d like to suggest delivering system of clothes by bicycles in Copenhagen. The advantages we think are eco-friendly, local employment, community revitalization. We must make clearer about our smart city application and think about appropriate system in the remaining two weeks.
