The second general seminar,3Q,October 20th, 2020

Reported by Taro Miyauchi

There were three sessions; Research progress presentation, Key-word session, and bonding session.

Lab members cerebrated Abe-sensei’s birthday before the seminar started, because his birthday is October 25th. Since we meet online via zoom, we cannot cerebrate directly. So secretly to the Abe-sensei, we changed our backgrounds of zoom from normal to pictures of celebrating birthday and sang HBD song! This surprise succeeded and sensei may feel happy. We were also glad to cerebrate him. I want to meet all members directly soon.

1.Research progress presentation

In this session, two members report about the progress of their researches. Today’s speakers were Masaya and Augustin.

The theme of Masaya’s research is energy poverty in Japan. There are qualitative differences about energy supply between each area. Target of his research is to find the best policies to solve this Japanese problem by searching the energy policies of other countries. Energy poverty is a large problem in the world, and many countries have already taken measures to cope with this situation. There are many methods and almost all of them may have both of merits and demerits. These methods are also related to the situation of each country (climate, population, religion, and so on). Like this, all policies have reasons why they are enforced. Referring to policies of some countries, it is important to think that the policies are suitable to incite to in Japan.

Augustin is one of new members since September, 2020. His research theme is to use more renewable energy in Japan and eventually renewable energy is fully used. For solving the global warming and shortage of energy resource, recently renewable energy has been introduced all over the world. Renewable energy is not depleted and do not emit greenhouse gas, but it is expensive and usually depends on the climate of each region. To increase the usage rate of renewable energy to 100%, we have to consider in many aspects: policies, costs, skills, and so on. It is not easy, but if Augustin can find the idea, it may be a very big finding.

Both of Masaya and Augustin focus on Japanese energy problem, but I take what the problem in Japan they thought were different. Masaya thinks the gap of energy supply between city and countryside is a big problem and we should reduce disparity (from aspects of society). On the other hand, Augustin thinks the resource of energy is important and we should change from fossil fuel to renewable energy (from environmental perspective). The important things they derived are different, but there may be some common important findings through their researches, so I want them to share what they find and to make better reports.

2.Key-word session

In this session, all members wrote the key words of two presentations, Masaya’s and Augustin’s at first session. My PC had some troubles and I was not able to hear this part much. However, many lab members think the key-words of Masaya’s research is “energy poverty”, and key-words of Augustin’s research is “renewable energy”.

3.Bonding session

Today’s topic is “The deceased you want to meet.” I want to know that “If you can meet only one decedent, who would you like to meet and what do you want to do with him or her?”. Many members selected famous people (Beethoven, Haruma Miura and so on) or family. Now I like some Japanese comics that modern people meet many dead people. In these comics, many people who are real famous characters in history appear and they cooperate with people of today to solve big problems. From these comics, I came to think if I could meet the dead people and talk something (ex: Prince Shotoku ‘Syotokutaishi’ really can hear the story of many people at the same time, Cleopatra was really so beautiful, and so on), so I decided on this theme. I wanted all members to consider not to be intricate, but many members felt this theme was a little dark topic, so next time I want to choose more fanny one.
