先日東京にも今季初の雪が降り、暖冬である今年もやっと冬らしい天気となってきました。そのような中、私たち阿部研究室のメンバー7人で1月15日（金）～17日（日）にかけてこちら東京よりも寒さの厳しい新潟県魚沼市大白川集落へ訪れました。先述の通り、私たちの研究室では新潟県の「大学生の力を生かした集落活性化事業」に取り組んでおり、今回は昨年6月の最初の訪問から数えて3回目となります。今回の主な目的は、3月の活性化事業最終発表で披露する予定の大白川集落のPV作成のために、集落で毎年開催される賽の神祭りや集落の風景の撮影と現地の方々へインタビュー調査を行うことでした。
1日目は、主にバスや電車を乗り継いでの移動で、集落に近づくにつれて段々と増えていく雪に終始興奮しっぱなしでした。私は昨年6月以来の2回目の訪問だったのですが、冬の大白川はその時とはまた違う一面をみせてくれました。今年は暖冬の影響でここ数十年類を見ないほどの少ない積雪量だったらしいのですが、それでも私たちにとって普段はなかなか見ることのできない雪景色に圧倒されました。そして、雪を見るとついつい触って遊んでみたりと、童心に返らされました。
2日目は、早朝の雪掻きのお手伝いから始まりました。宿泊させていただいた旅館の屋根や車に積もった雪を慣れない手つきで取り除いていきましたが、想像以上の力仕事に雪国に住まれている方々のたくましさや苦労を感じました。午前中には集落から車で数分のところにある大原スキー場を訪れ、撮影を行ったり、スキー場で働いていらっしゃる鈴木さんに大白川の魅力や現在やられているNPOの活動などについてお話を伺いました。また、本事業で私たちと大白川集落の橋渡し役となってもらい、現地でもご活躍されている井上さんにもお仕事の話や集落のことなどインタビューをさせて頂きました。
午後からは、大白川集落やそれを囲む山々のすばらしい雪景色を撮影したり、集落の方々にお話を伺ったりしました。
3日目は、今回のメインイベントである賽の神祭りに参加をさせて頂きました。年の始まりに行われるこの伝統的なお祭りでは、集落に婿入りした婿を火のついた藁の中に入れて燻すことで、その年の無病息災や子孫繁栄を祈願する「婿燻し」が行われます。その婿燻しを今回私たちのうち3人が体験するという貴重な機会を頂きました。婿燻しは、まず雪の積もった場所をかんじきを履いて踏み固め、雪の中に足が埋まってしまわないよう足場を作ることから始まります。そこから婿を入れるための穴を掘り、それを覆うようにして4,5mほどの大きさに藁が組まれます。集落の方たちの協力したあまりの手際のよさに1時間足らずですべてが完成して婿燻しが始まりました。私たちの研究室からKes、石尾さん、石田君が順に燻され、穴から出てきたときには厄払いのために顔に炭を塗られた状態で、周囲を囲んでいた集落の方々から笑顔で迎えられて盛り上がっていました。一部石田君の髪の毛が焦げるというアクシデントもありましたが、それも含めて存分にお祭りを楽しむことができたと思います。初めての参加で集落の者ではない私たちを快く婿燻しに受け入れていただいた集落の方々に感謝しております。
お昼にはなかなか体験することのできない餅つきをさせて頂き、東工大で培った男たちの力を発揮し、おいしいお餅を頂きました。
今回の訪問で、集落の方々のひとつひとつの言動や行動から、集落の自然や周囲の人に対する強い思い入れを改めて感じることができました。そして、今の厳しい冬を乗り越えることがその結びつきをよりいっそう強くさせているようでした。そこに私たちのような外からの新しい力が加わることで集落全体を盛り上げていけたらと思っております。3月の最終発表へ向けて、私たちの提案する事業を実現すべくこれからも邁進していきたいと思います。
以下、今回大白川集落を訪問した研究室メンバーの感想です。
石田
「今冬は全国的な暖冬にあり、大白川も例外でなく例年に比べて極めて少ない積雪量であるそうです。それでも首都圏に住む私たちからすると、大白川の寒さや積雪は想像以上に厳しいものでした。大白川の冬の様相を垣間見ることができたのではないかと思います。
今回の訪問で改めて認識したことは、住民の方々が大白川のその冬の厳しさと「共存」していたことです。前回訪問時（昨年6月）には住民の方々から冬の厳しさや辛さを度々伺っていましたので、今回の暖冬は皆さんにとって喜ばしいものであるかと想像していました。しかしながら、雪が少ないことに対して少なからず寂しさのようなものを感じられているように見えたり、より現実的には、来春からの山菜取りや稲作、熊狩りへの影響を心配なさっていたりと、冬の厳しさがもたらす恩恵がこの暖冬によって表面化していたと思います。今後は今訪問で撮影した動画や写真を一つのムービーにまとめ上げていく作業に入りますが、そのような点も表現できればと考えています。

「私は今回初めて大白川に訪れたのですが、風景は聞いていた通り自然あふれる美しいものでご飯も絶品。特にお米は一粒一粒がしっかりした歯ごたえでとても美味しかったです。そんな中で一つ予想していなかったことがあります。それは直接伺ったものではないのですが、私が今回の調査で最も感じたところで、地域活性化の難しさを肌で感じさせるものでした。その予想外のものとは、意思疎通の難しさです。それはインタビューを行った際、特にご年配の方から感じられました。こちら側の大白川を盛り上げたいという気持ちがうまく伝わっておらず、住民の方々との温度差のようなものが感じられました。ここがまさに今後プロジェクトを進めていく上でポイントとなる部分であり、「一方的な、望まれない支援」にならないように注意しつつ、大白川の良さを最大限PR出来る動画を、住民の方々と共に作り上げていきたいなと思います。」

「“Ooshirakawa” is one of the most beautiful villages in Japan because there is much white snow, interesting ceremony, and many smiles. Through this visit, I got directly and indirectly some of the views of the villagers, and knew the activities of some people to try to get rid of obstacles to continuance of Ooshirakawa. I think it is worth sharing these between those who is interested in rural area in Japan, so people would like to know about Ooshirakawa. 「Oshirakawa feels like an exemplar of the situation and lifestyle in most of the villages all around the world. In this village where children and youngsters are hardly observable, senior people have gently adapted themselves to the environment. Greeting each and every person with whom our eyes met revived the sense of living as one community. Memories of our crazy activities in snow, delightful cuisines, participation in Sainokami festival, and conversations with local people will be preserved for forever. I hope we will succeed in creating an influential promotional video of this village to help it prosper and flourish in the near future.」

「Friday:
Leaving from Ikebukuro Station at noon, we travelled by bus and train to Ooshirakawa, where we arrived at around 6pm. We were warmly greeted by a women working in Ooshirakawa for the government. At the hotel we were treated to a delicious dinner with local and traditional Japanese foods. As we had to get up early on Saturday we went to bed early after having a get together in our room to discuss the plan for the next day.
Saturday:
After waking up we helped the hotel owners to free their driveway from the fresh snow, which was a good morning workout and made the served breakfast taste even better. Shortly after the breakfast we departed for a nearby skiing resort, were we could go up the mountain with the locally run ski lift and start our filming while walking down on foot. We got some great shots from the beautiful surroundings and an interview of the owner and our guide after lunch. Back home in the village, we explored the town and were invited to a home, interviewing a local and as Japanese hospitality is known for, some homemade snacks and a place at the “fireplace” to warm up.
In the evening we met with the women from the ski resort and our guide with her sister and had a wonderful evening with delicious food and locally produced sake.
Sunday:
In the morning, we could observe and participate in a local tradition (formerly done for new husbands married into town) where a big “tent” of straw was build. The new “husband” had to enter get a face-paint while the tent slowly started to burn down and get out again (ideally without getting burned, which happened to one of us’ hair a bit). Nearly the whole town was present, even some people neighbouring towns joined with their children. Afterwards we could make Mochi ourselves at the hotel in the traditional way and everybody got to hammer the rice for a few turns, which also was a fun experience. After several dishes, containing Mochi, for lunch we conducted another 2 interviews and eventually had to leave for Tokyo again at 4pm.
I feel very privileged and lucky that I could visit such a traditional town which such nice people! Also I’m very very happy that I was so lucky to go with the best lab-mates I could imagine, who also were so nice to translate everything for me and always made me feel very comfortable!
