Study Abroad Blog from Denmark, Vol.3

Hi everyone, this is Riho.

I’ve finished my study abroad program and come back to Japan finally! Although I had some small troubles in Denmark, I am happy to be able to return home after completing the program safely. Also, I’m surprised about hot weather of Japan because I felt comfortable with the weather of Denmark. And, for now, I’m annoyed about jet lag rather than when I entered Denmark, but gradually, I think I am getting adapted to Japan Time.

Below, I’d like to look back my experience of final two weeks.

In final week, I traveled Roskilde, Odense, Malmo. My course finished on 24th of June, so the next week, I had a trip week!! Though Roskilde and Odense are the city of Denmark, I thought the atmosphere is different a little. Especially Odense was my favorite city definitely, the city was combination of modern and art. Also, it is well known as the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, the king of fairy tales. In the town, there are statues associated with Andersen’s fairy tales, and I felt as if you are in a fairy tale land. In Malmo, also had a beautiful western building and art in the city. Malmo is the city of Sweden (but close to Copenhagen!), so it was interesting to note that the currency went from the Danish krone to the Swedish krone. I found and got a favorite mag cup in Malmo.

The following photos are my travel record. The former two photos are in Odense, the others are in Malmo.

In my course of smart cities, we had poster presentation in final day of class. We suggested the business of the delivery service with bicycle targeting Copenhagen. This service is specific to clothing. Already it has some food delivery service in Copenhagen, but we couldn’t find any clothing delivery services. Basically, mail-ordering clothes will likely take at least a couple of days or a week, depending on shipping from overseas and other factors. However, by using our suggested system, the customer can get some clothing sooner than it. Moreover, the government of Denmark promote the policy of bicycle, so using bicycle is advantageous and eco-friendly. This can also help local industries hit by a coronavirus pandemic.

We had a discussion again and again and made our idea sophisticated. I especially was in charge of technology side, I created overall architectures and the system of optimized route for delivery. Thinking about system was so interesting for me because the one of the important aspects of smart cities is how technology (like IoT, ICT, AI) installed to realize the business idea. I imagined some possibilities by using such technology and how makes it real.

The following figures are our project. The first one is the final completed poster, and the rest are the parts I was responsible for (some excerpts from the report).

Looking back on the Smart City class as a whole, the group work assignments were tough, but very meaningful, including the lecture content. It would be great if the experience of taking classes in a country with advanced smart city technology can be applied to my future master’s thesis. Most importantly, I would like to appreciate the teachers and TAs of this course and my project team members.

Finally, this is the last time this blog will be published. I would like to thank everyone who has read all three series. See you soon!
